The recipe for 'Vinegar of the Four Thieves' is based on the herbs used by a family of perfumers during the time of the Black Plague.

So they infused vinegar with those herbs and rubbed them on their bodies for protection from certain death. This antiseptic spray does have a strong vinegar smell, however, it will dissipate within a couple of hours.
